The number one way to keep Lovebird(s) happy is to have a bonded pair of Lovebirds. A single Lovebird will never be really happy. Many books will say that a single Lovebird will "bond" with its owner better. It is simply not true, a pair will bond with you just as well and they will actually compete for your attention and affection. Lovebirds are very smart and loyal to their owners, just like a dog or dogs. They are meant to live in pairs. I will only sell bonded pairs. Lovebirds like cages with flat roofs and horizontal bars so that they can climb around easily. Avoid cages with peaked roofs. Bar spacing should be 5/8 inches or less. White or light colored cages are best for cleaning purposes. Cage size is not that important, wider rather than taller is preferable, Lovebirds tend to stay at the top of cages. Cage location is important, I find that near a window with indirect sunlight is their favorite. Good lighting is important, special sun bulbs can be purchased. Avoid dark damp places. Toys, toys, toys, Lovebirds love them. Mirrors, swings, beaded toys, ladders, they love to chew on rope, cotton is best. A larger size bath cup in their cage is great. All of my cages have a hanging half coconut or bowl that hold small toys. I hang them with the cotton rope. I spend most of my time reloading their little toys into the holders. Little toys such as bottle caps, cat balls and small plastic rings. Party Planner is a great place to find small toys. Avoid metalic coated toys. Set up a seperate play area for your birds to come out of their own cage to play on. You can use another open cage with more toys and attach apple branches to the outside of it, they love to play on and chew on apple branches. Lovebirds love millet spray, it is a treat and a good incentive or reward for teaching your Lovebirds. Put some out on the play cage. Contrary to what you may read in books, Lovebirds do not like changes to their environment. Moving their toys around or constantly relocating cages is not a good idea. Making changes is used more to change bad behavior.
